Labor Day weekend, a good friend visited us for a few days. After a busy weekend at The Windover Inn, we “labored” hard all day Labor Day Monday to get our 7 other rooms ready for guests. This gave us an opportunity on Tuesday to show off more of our beautiful Western North Carolina area to our friend!
We decided to visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and in particular, to make Clingman’s Dome our destination. Clingman’s is a world unto itself, both geographically and spiritually. The approach road to Clingman’s reveals stunning vistas, but the best is yet to come! The parking area is about a half mile from the observation tower, but the scenes from here are already stunning enough for those who can’t or don’t care to hike up the short, but somewhat steep paved road to the tower. The observation tower is, itself, a wonder of architecture. Not a tower in the traditional sense, it arcs upward in a circular pattern giving visitors a true panorama of the scenery as they climb to the rotunda that marks the promontory. The vistas from the top are breathtaking! Depending on the weather, views into five states are possible. Less than an hour away, this destination is one the reasons we chose western North Carolina as our home!
